International Quality Standards for Building Stone
Quality standards ensure that natural stone products perform as expected in real-world conditions. Understanding these standards helps specifiers, contractors, and buyers make informed decisions.
ISO 14001: Environmental management system certification that demonstrates a producer's commitment to sustainable quarrying and processing practices. Sadaf has been ISO 14001 certified since 2024.
CE Marking: Mandatory for stone products entering the European market. It indicates conformity with health, safety, and environmental protection standards.
Iranian National Standard 11479: The domestic standard for dimensional stone covering physical and mechanical properties including density, water absorption, compressive strength, and flexural strength.
Key Technical Parameters to Verify:
Density (kg/m³): Higher density generally indicates better durability. Quality granite: 2,600-2,800 kg/m³. Quality travertine: 2,300-2,500 kg/m³.
Water Absorption (%): Lower is better for frost resistance. Premium granite: below 0.4%. Standard granite: 0.4-0.8%. Travertine: 1-3% (requires sealing for exterior use).
Compressive Strength (MPa): Minimum 100 MPa for granite used in paving. Travertine: minimum 30 MPa for structural applications.
Flexural Strength (MPa): Important for thin stone applications. Granite: minimum 8 MPa. Travertine: minimum 4 MPa.
Mohs Hardness: Granite (6-7) is suitable for all traffic conditions. Travertine (3-4) is suitable for pedestrian areas.
Abrasion Resistance: Measured by the Böhme abrasion test. Quality stone should show minimal thickness loss after standard testing.
At Sadaf, every production batch is tested against these parameters. Our technical specifications are published on each product page for full transparency.
